I was actually wondering about what happens in case you want to use music/songs in a film. What are the implications (in terms of copyrights)? And what happens if they catch you using a song in your film without permission?

For student films it's not a big deal. The only time it might affect you is if you're putting your film on Youtube, they've got rather strict rules on copyright. Though I'd recommend uploading films to Vimeo rather than Youtube, but I don't know how strict they are with music copyright.

I think you need to know where your film is going to be screened eventually. If you want to send it to student film festivals (which is great exposure), then they normally insist on no copyright infringements (which includes music that you don't have permission to use). Check out the Exposures Film Festival guidelines (one of the main student film fests in the UK): www.exposuresfestival.co.uk/enter"Make sure your work does not infringe any copyright – you must have permission for any music or images used" I guess the thing to do would be to firstly ask permission for the artist who made the music originally (easier with unsigned artists), or get someone to make an original score for you! There are plenty of musicians out there ready and waiting to make scores and music...
